Kate Wheeler is one of Canada’s most respected television journalists. She began her multi award winning on air news career at CityTv in 1985.
In 1987 Wheeler joined CFTO in Toronto as a reporter where she would become the weekend news anchor in 1990. The following year she was promoted to co-anchor of CFTO’s Flagship News at 6.
Wheeler has sat in for both Lloyd Robertson and Sandie Rinaldo on CTV National News and also handled long term fill in duties for news and hosting on Canada AM.
Wheeler is the recipient of the Gordon Sinclair Award for Live Special Event Coverage-Conrad Black Verdict ; Four RTNDA Awards for Best News Feature; the National Association of Science Writers in America Award for “Outstanding and probing coverage that explains why an issue in the sciences matters to society.” for Making Miracles – A look at the medicine and ethics of new reproductive technologies. She has received countless community, police and fire department awards.
Wheeler served as senior reporter and principal news anchor for CTV News Channel from February 2001 to November 2008 before moving to Corus Entertainment to launch the CBC affiliate in Durham.
She was featured in a five-part CityTv news serial called The Kate Wheeler Story: Diary of a Victim which detailed her previous experience as the victim of a random stabbing attack.
Until September 2013 Wheeler was News Director and Anchor for Studio 12 News, on CHEX Durham, which launched in September 2010.
She feels her greatest storytelling triumph is garnering a million dollars from the Ontario government for the cochlear implant program at SickKids Hospital in Toronto… she will never forget being there when thanks to that funding 15 children heard their mother’s voices for the very first time .
Kate Wheeler has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2005. She also manages a media training and consulting company “Media Bites” and is a contributor to AdvocateDaily.com.
Wheeler has interviewed celebrities,rock stars , princes and queens (of all kinds) ..but there’s nothing she enjoys more than nailing a crooked politician to the wall.
